Ganguly Chappelled again!!!

When we thought the Ganguly story is over despite his occasional high scores in domestic cricket which grab the headlines of our media, Chappell fires his latest salvo where he says he did not know Ganguly's attempts to cling on to captaincy were related to his finances. The media goes berserk again. Not unexpected. Chappell does have a point there what with 50 crore deals at stake on the endorsements front for Ganguly. Obviously Ganguly would not have liked the non-performance clause to get invoked. 50 crores is no small deal even for a Maharaj!!! Ganguly wants to his play his cards again over this latest episode.

That apart, Ganguly can definitely take credit for building a team from nowhere, his strategies of backing up youngsters etc etc but he overdid it. He refused to see beyond the likes of Zaheer Khans and Harbhajan Singhs. Even the Sehwags and Yuvrajs took their place for granted. These guys needed to be woken out of their comfort zones to realise their full potential. They had to be reminded of their primary responsibilites over their star status. And come on, the indian cricket team is not Ganguly's family business. There are people in waiting all the time. You need to constantly improvise on your strategies and team combination. The point is to look beyond individuals. As I had always maintained, if you can produce results irrespective of constitution of the XI, who cares? Only the sentimental idiots do! Unfortunately we are full of such ppl.

Lifetime free Credit Cards

Now I am tired of all these telemarketing folks who want to offer me a lifetime free credit card. I responded to someone today saying this is so commonplace these days and I am looking for a bank that can pay me annual subscription for me to own their card and I would levy late fees if they did not pay their subscription fee on time. Obviously the person at the other end did not understand one bit.
On the flip side, I really don't mind these phone calls as these are the only girls who call me up :-)

Bihar Elections 2005

After getting Lalooed for 15 years, does Bihar have a hope now?? However the psephologist in me tells me that the next time elections are held in Bihar whenever that happens, Laloo will come back with a thumping majority. Well, I know you need no psephologist to predict something like this if you go by the patterns of election results in India. I can only wishfully think my prediction goes wrong.

Reverse Management

Let us look at how the so-called performance review thingy works in reality :-) Most of us are aware of the bell curve funda involved here where the assessees are FINALLY distributed over a bell curve. However in reality, this is how it works in most cases. First the bell curve is drawn and people are placed at different points. Mind you, your position on the bell curve could be based on factors like a resignation threat you issued to the management very recently or your constant nagging of your boss for a promotion (because your timeout in your present role has been reached!!!) or you had just got a promotion the last cycle. Then a rating is arrived at based on one's position on the bell curve. Now the management comes up with a justification for this rating. Ideally this process should have been the other way round. Now this is what deserves to be called "Reverse Management" on the lines of "Reverse Engineering". Did we ever use the word "performance" here???
